The Repair-or-Replace Decision (Read This First)
n
Repair makes sense when: The fixture is under 10 years old, the failure is a single component (flapper, cartridge, motor reset), repair cost is under 40% of replacement, and the fixture is in good cosmetic condition.
n
Replace makes sense when: The fixture is 15+ years old, this is the second repair on the same fixture within a year, repair would cost 50%+ of replacement, or you wanted to upgrade anyway.

Toilet Repair & Replacement
n
Running toilet ($100–$200 repair): Wastes 200+ gallons of water per day. Almost always a worn flapper, faulty fill valve, or float set too high. The dye test (food coloring in tank; check bowl 10 minutes later) confirms a flapper leak.
n
Clogged toilet that won’t clear: Points to a deeper drain blockage. We use a toilet auger first. If the auger doesn’t clear it, the issue is in the drain line.
n
Leaking at the base: Almost always a failed wax ring. Water under the base after every flush means sewer gas and wastewater leaking under your flooring. Critical to fix — left alone, it damages the subfloor and creates mold risk.
n
Toilet replacement: $200–$400 install + the fixture. A WaterSense-certified toilet uses 1.28 gallons per flush vs. 3.5+ gallons in pre-1992 fixtures.
nn
Faucet Repair & Replacement
n
Dripping faucet ($150–$350 repair): Almost always a worn cartridge, ceramic disc, or rubber seal.
n
Reduced water flow at a single faucet: Typically a clogged aerator. Unscrew it, soak in vinegar, scrub off mineral buildup, reinstall. Free 10-minute DIY.
n
Faucet replacement: $200–$400 install + the fixture. Hard water at 15–20 GPG shortens faucet lifespan by 30–40% compared to soft-water markets.

Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement
n
Humming but not spinning: Jammed flywheel. Don’t keep hitting the switch — you’ll burn out the motor. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If that doesn’t work, use the hex wrench that came with the disposal to manually rotate the flywheel.
n
Leaking from the bottom: Almost always a failed internal seal. The unit is at end of life. Replacement, not repair.
n
Disposal replacement: $250–$500 install + the unit. We install InSinkErator, Waste King, and Moen. Light cooking gets a 1/2 HP unit. Heavy cooking warrants 3/4 or 1 HP.
n
What not to put in any disposal: Grease, coffee grounds, fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks), pasta and rice, bones, fruit pits.
