What to Do Right Now
- Shut off the main water supply valve. Most Plano homes have it near the water heater, in a utility closet, or on the exterior foundation wall. If you can’t find it, shut off at the street meter.
- Turn off the water heater. Gas: dial to “Pilot.” Electric: flip the breaker. A water heater running with no water in the system will burn itself out.
- Move electronics and valuables away from standing water.
- Document with photos and video before cleanup — you’ll need this for an insurance claim.
- Do not touch standing water near outlets or electrical panels.
What Causes Burst Pipes in North Texas
Hard freezes. DFW homes route supply lines through unconditioned attics, garages, and exterior walls. When temperatures drop below 20°F for several hours — as they did during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 — those uninsulated sections freeze and expand. Copper and CPVC fail suddenly. PEX is more resilient but still vulnerable at fittings.
Aging copper and galvanized pipe. Homes built before 1995 often have supply lines that have been under stress for 30–50 years. Plano’s moderately hard water (15–20 grains per gallon) accelerates internal corrosion. A burst is often the result of a long-developing pinhole that finally gives way under pressure.
High static water pressure. City supply pressure sometimes exceeds 80 PSI in parts of Plano and Allen. Without a pressure-reducing valve, that constant pressure stresses pipe fittings around the clock.
How We Repair Burst Pipes
Locate and assess. We confirm the break location and check the surrounding pipe for additional stress fractures or corrosion. One burst is sometimes a sign that nearby sections are also at risk.
Targeted repair. For a clean break in otherwise sound pipe, we cut out the failed section, replace with matching material, and pressure-test before leaving.
Full section replacement. When the pipe is corroded along a longer run, we replace the full run rather than patching a section that will fail again.
Emergency repipe. For homes where multiple sections are at risk — common in galvanized pipe homes from the 1950s–70s — an emergency PEX repipe stops the cascade of failures. We can restore water service the same day in most cases.
Preventing Future Burst Pipes
- Insulate attic and exterior-wall pipe runs before November. Pre-slit foam pipe insulation is inexpensive and installs quickly.
- Install a pressure-reducing valve if your home’s static pressure exceeds 80 PSI. A PRV protects every fitting in the house.
- Know where your main shutoff is before an emergency. Walk through it today.
- Let faucets drip on nights below 20°F. Moving water is much harder to freeze than standing water.
